Job Description

The ESPN Mobile team is responsible for supporting a diverse collection of mobile products including downloadable mobile applications across all major platforms, mobile games, messaging (SMS/notifications), mobile web sites, mobile TV and mobile video.

This position is responsible for the technical architecture and development of significant, immersive iOS applications at ESPN. This position reports to the Sr. Manager, Mobile Technology, in the Mobile Product Development organization, and will work in concert with a cross-functional team of Product Managers, Designers, Engineers and Editors to create and manage the industry’s best mobile sports experiences.

This position is hands-on development and technical design, though with ample opportunity to influence product design and specifications. The ideal candidate will have several applications they’ve contributed to in-market and in use by consumers. Ideal candidates will also have a track record of leading development and as a platform expert. Candidates should have expert-level understanding of the iOS platform, SDK components, and tools such as Xcode and Instruments. They should have expert understanding of concurrency and multithreading along with a sound understanding of HTTP.

iOS Engineer | Responsibilities:

• Hands-on coding primarily using Objective-C / Cocoa Touch, as well as JavaScript (AJAX/JSON)
• Understanding of HTTP and interacting with REST-style web services.
• Provide training, guidance, mentoring and leadership to technical personnel on the iOS platform
• Lead the development of multiple downloadable applications
• Work with Product Managers, Designers, Engineers and Editors to define new product requirements, features, and functionality
• Author specifications, technical design documents, and support/troubleshooting guides
• Provide support and maintenance for deployed ESPN products and/or manage third parties providing these tasks
• Lead the technical analysis and evaluation of new technologies and product enhancements.
• Recommends technical decisions for frameworks, and design patterns.

iOS Engineer | Requirements:

• Minimum of 6 years of work experience, preferably with a consumer-oriented company developing highly-immersive client/server content-centric products
• Expert understanding of iOS including iPad, iPhone, and iPod and SDK version differences
• Experience writing technical specs and driving them through development
• Expert level understanding of benefits and constraints of current Internet technologies and HTML, JavaScript
• Strong communication skills
• Manage multiple, complex projects within a short development cycle.
• Ability to operate effectively in a team-oriented and collaborative environment
• Must demonstrate solid organization/communication skills.
• Familiarity with Android, Microsoft Windows Phone 7/8 or BlackBerry 10 platforms
• Passion for sports!

The Senior Web/Mobile Developer will take a lead role in the specification and development of mobile-friendly/responsive Web applications, native iOS and Android mobile applications, and related digital projects.

Mobile Developer | Responsibilities:

• Work closely with Product, Project Management, and other Tech team members and Developers to create and document technical specifications for new digital products
• Work with UX / Graphic Design team members to create and implement innovative and unique user experiences
• Develop in Objective C, Java, HTML5, and other technologies to create both native and mobile-Web products
• Work closely with QA and Web Operations team members to ensure product quality and scalability
• Incorporate core business objectives in both short- and long-term development road maps for new products across a variety of platforms and devices
• Review and recommend emerging technologies as appropriate to support ongoing and future development efforts and maintain the team’s ability to deliver cutting-edge products in a timely manner
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders, product and project managers, other developers, and support personnel throughout a product’s lifecycle
• Keep current with WWE programs and products

Mobile Developer | Requirements

• 6+ years of core Web development experience in high-scale environments
• 3+ years of mobile application development experience
• 3+ years of back-end development experience to support mobile applications (PHP and node.js strongly preferred)
• Fluency in both Objective C and Java
• Fluency with multiple social networking SDKs and APIs including Twitter, Facebook, and Google
• Fluency with REST services, service-driven development, and emerging technologies such as Web sockets
• Familiarity with cloud services (Amazon EC2 preferred)
• Familiarity with content management systems (Drupal preferred)
• Familiarity with emerging development tools and techniques, including Phonegap, Titanium, and HTML5
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to product quality
• Strong communications skills, and the ability to work effectively with both small and large teams over the course of a project
• BA/BS in related area of expertise or equivalent experience
• Unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States
• Must be 18 years or older
